Seaweed Snacks may pose a Danger to your Health

You may want to think twice before eating your favorite seaweed snack or feeding it to your children. ConsumerLabs recommends limiting your intake to once per day due to their findings. After evaluating six popular seaweed snacks, the results showed that all products contained substantial traces of heavy metals including iodine, lead, thallium, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic. Although Proposition 65 is sometimes found on the label to warn consumers about traces of heavy metals, some of these foods surpassed the recommended guidelines.

While health experts normally recommend food products with iodine for their health benefits, these seaweed snacks contained excessive amounts. High iodine intake may lead to health consequences. Consuming heavy metals may also lead to heavy metal poisoning. This led to a class action lawsuit against Costco’s Kirkland Organic Roasted Seaweed Snacks. The Vargas v. Costco lawsuit claims that the Kirland product failed to mention that the product contained heavy metals including cadmium. Consumers are under the false impression that these snacks are healthy. Exposure to heavy metals overtime can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and even early death.

Acute symptoms may include:

• Difficulty breathing

• Stomach discomfort/Cramps

• Fatigue

• Nausea/Vomiting

• Headaches

• Diarrhea

• Low-grade fever/Chills

Chronic exposure can lead to:

• Vision problems

• Insomnia

• Anemia

• Brain fog/Memory Loss

 • Miscarriage (Loss of pregnancy)

 • Kidney Failure

• Liver damage (Toxic Hepatitis/Cirrhosis)

• Cancer
